MINI SPEEDGOAT ULTRA

Has proved to be an excellent alternative to a lightweight folder when I want something more sturdy. Super easy to slip into my daypack, hip pack or pocket when hiking. It has also proved to be an awesome little parring knife in the kitchen (cleans up much more easily than a folder or paracord wrapped fixed blade).

However, bearing in mind that this is sold as an ‘ultra premium’ product, I do have a couple of grumbles:

- The sheath, while being generally excellent and well made, does not fit the model as well as it could. It appears to be the standard Mini Speedgoat sheath, so does not accommodate the slightly extended handle scales of the Ultra. The result is that the knife does not seat quite deeply enough in the sheath for the detents to latch onto the finger guard properly, making it feel less secure. You can tighten up the retention ***** to increase compression on the blade, but this in turn makes it harder the sheath and draw the blade. I did contact customer services about this, and got what I suspect was an AI response suggesting I use the tension *****… In the end I heated the mouth of the sheath with a hot air *** and reshaped it. Doesn’t look as neat now but fits much better.

- For an ‘ultra premium’ product, it’s a shame to see file/cut marks all down the spine and top of the tang, as opposed to the rear and underside of the tang which are nicely ground and polished.

Hence only 4 stars, otherwise would definitely be 5.

Standing behind quality craftsmanship and true dedication to a craft is a rare trait these days, but Montana Knife Company must have been listening.

Among my oldest and most cherished possessions are a classic Buck 110 folding knife and a well-worn Bible. I received both around the same time, nearly sixty years ago, and both have served me exceptionally well throughout the decades. Truth be told, a man really only needs one Bible to guide his journey. But when it comes to knives—well, that is an entirely different story. That very first Buck 110 sparked a lifelong passion, and I have been collecting knives ever since.

Just this morning, I put my new Mini Speedgoat to the test. It sliced right through a tough pot roast effortlessly, floating through the meat like it was warm butter. The precision, sharpness, and feel of the blade blew me away. Safe to say, I am officially hooked.
